Hyperreality

“Am i dreaming of the butterfly

or is the butterfly dreaming of me?”

(Taoism)

The term hyperreality characterizes the inability of consciousness to distinguish reality from fantasy

Umberto Eco and Jean Baudrillard refer to Disneyland as an ultimate hyperreality in America. Eco believes that Disneyland with its settings such as Main Street and full sized houses has been created to look “absolutely realistic,” taking visitors’ imagination to a “fantastic past”[5]. This false reality creates an illusion and makes it more desirable for people to buy this reality. Disneyland works in a system that enables visitors to feel that technology and the created atmosphere “can give us more reality that nature can”[6]. The fake animals such as alligators and hippopotamus are all available to people in Disneyland and for everyone to see. The “fake nature” of Disneyland satisfies our imagination and daydream fantasies in real life. Therefore, they seem more admirable and attractive. When entering Disneyland, consumers form into lines to gain access to each attraction. Then they are ordered by people with special uniforms to follow the rules, such as where to stand or where to sit. If the consumer follows each rule correctly, they can enjoy “the real thing” and see things that are not available to them outside of Disneyland’s doors [7].

  1. Hyper Reality is an extension of Virtual Reality which was the rage not too long ago. The concept of Virtual Reality lies heavily on the ground rules of simulation, interaction, artificality, immersion, telepresence, fullbody immersion and network communications.

Now the hyper real experience continues to blur the traditional notion of what is thought to be real and what is simulated. Although used heavily mostly in gaming, the hyper real technology has extended to being used as simulation for modern warefare which is used extensively to reduce costs. Animation is another common platform as computer graphic advances has allowed for the creation of Virtual Idols like Date in Japan and a ghastly looking KoA in Korea recently. No doubt if done well, they can challenge the concept of the “images” we idolise. We do not meet our idols in the flesh 90% of the time anyway thus the entire make believe singer/actor can be rather interesting .
American film makers used that as a story line in the blockbuster: SIMone in which an artifically computer generated actress won super stardom although her co-stars have not even seen her at all.
The entire concept of reality will continue to be blurred in days to come and who knows……. maybe one day we will realise what we see now might not even be real at all.
